MPO/MTP is a high-density optical fiber pre-connect system generally used in three key areas:

• Data center applications with high-density environments
• Optical fiber to the building (FTTB)
• Internal connector applications in fiber equipment such as splitters, 40G QSFP, and 100G CFP

MPO/MTP trunk cables are used to interconnect cassettes, panels, or ruggedized MPO fan-outs, spanning MDA, HAD, and EDA zones. They enable rapid deployment of high-density backbone cabling in data centers and other high-fiber environments, reducing network installation and reconfiguration time.

MPO/MTP trunk cables use a compact and rugged microcable structure. They are divided by color into SM, MM, and 10G MM categories. Fiber counts range from 12 to 144. MTP polarity options follow TIA standards: Style A (up), Style B (down), and Style C (up/up).

Three polarity methods — Type A, Type B, and Type C — are used to guarantee correct bi-directional allocation.

• OM4 is a laser-optimized 50µm fiber with 4.7 GHz·km EMB bandwidth, designed for 10 Gb/s, 40 Gb/s, and 100 Gb/s transmission.
• OM4 fiber has been on the market since 2005, originally sold as premium OM3 or OM3 fiber. The OM4 cable designation standardizes nomenclature across all manufacturers, giving customers a clearer understanding of the product they are purchasing.
• OM4 fiber is completely backwards compatible with OM3 fiber and shares the same distinctive aqua jacket.
• OM4 was developed specifically for VCSEL laser transmission and allows 10 Gigabit/second link distances of up to 550 meters (compared to 300 m with OM3). It offers an Effective Modal Bandwidth (EMB) of 4700 MHz·km.

• OM3 and OM4 cables are both types of graded-index multimode fiber optic cable, specified under IEEE and TIA/EIA standards.
• OM3 and OM4 are laser-optimized multimode fiber (LOMMF) cables, specially designed to work with today's high-speed networks.
• While they have very similar constructions, OM4 performs over longer distances due to its 4700 MHz bandwidth versus the 2500 MHz bandwidth of OM3 cabling. OM4 is one of the fastest fiber optic cables available. The standard was ratified by TIA/EIA in August 2009, and the IEEE 802.3ba 40G/100G Ethernet standard covering OM3 and OM4 was ratified in June 2010.
